Sender Spike has unveiled SN Zero, a free FM/vector hybrid synthesizer plugin for Windows. This innovative instrument combines the classic FM synthesis with vector-style crossfading, creating a unique sound that is both familiar and slightly offbeat.
The first thing to note about SN Zero is its limitation – it’s exclusively available for Windows users. The plugin runs as a 64-bit VST2, and unfortunately, it doesn’t support macOS. This might be due to the development framework used by Sender Spike.
Despite this limitation, SN Zero offers some impressive features. It has twelve FM algorithms, but what sets it apart is its vector crossfade section. Unlike traditional FM synthesizers, SN Zero lets you dynamically blend the carrier outputs using a vector-style X/Y approach, opening up new possibilities for evolving pads and textures.
The plugin is also multitimbral, supporting up to 32 voices of polyphony, and can load custom user waveforms, including multisample instruments and single-cycle wavetable content. Although wavetable frame morphing is currently a work in progress, the sample-loading capability makes SN Zero feel like an FM rompler – a rare find.
The only thing missing from this plugin is a set of factory presets. Instead, Sender Spike offers an optional personal sound pack, which I’d recommend downloading unless you plan to build everything from scratch. The GUI is minimalistic and takes some time to understand, but once adjusted, it’s not too bad.
SN Zero is free to download directly from the developer’s website, with no signup or activation required. Just be sure to check the installation notes, as some users will need to download an additional ZIP file containing extra files that must be placed in the main folder.
