Free Multiband compressors are a tough find. While newbies and noobs look for easy to use and understand multiband compressors with great sounding presets for their genre/style.
Pros look for specific taste in their multiband compressors. Could be anything like color, modelling, filters, surgical processing etc.
While both are right in their own mission of being the best producers, mixing engineer or whatsoever. But the goal remains the same: to make the best music known to mankind.
In order to serve this goal we searched across forums and also called a few musicians to ask them for their favourite Free Multibrand Compressor.

TDR Nova

Tokyo Dawn Labs gave us a Swiss Army knife for free when they put out TDR Nova.
What makes Nova a total standout is that it’s a “parallel” processor, which is a fancy way of saying it doesn’t mess with your sound’s phase or clarity until the compression actually kicks in.
From a multiband POV, it’s a total shapeshifter because you can bypass the EQ nodes to use it as a straight-up multiband compressor, or flip it around and use it as a clean parametric EQ if you just need to shape your tone.
Since you can toggle between a surgical dynamic tool and a standard static EQ, it’s way more flexible than your average multiband plugin.
For more details maybe read the manual. Or else watch a YT video on it.
ToneBoosters Multiband Compressor

ToneBoosters has a free MBC under their “BusTools” bundle for free.
It’s a pro-grade multiband compressor, the legacy version is surprisingly lightweight on your CPU while still giving you up to 10 bands of control.
Most freebies stop at three or four bands, but MBC lets you get way more surgical with how you split your audio.
It’s unique because it’s not just about squashing peaks; it has a built-in saturation and stereo width control for every single band.
You can use it like a creative shaper to make your lows wide and fuzzy while keeping your highs tight and clean.
It’s a total “set it and forget it” tool that feels much more expensive than a free legacy download. If you want a multiband that does more than just volume control, this bundle is a must-grab.

Xfer OTT

Steve Duda “The Legend” at Xfer Records basically took a famous Ableton setting and turned it into a standalone legend.
It’s an aggressive multiband compressor that can do upward and downward compression at the exact same time.
While regular compressors just squash the loud peaks, OTT pulls the quietest details like reverb tails or hidden grit up to the front, making everything sound hyper-bright and “in-your-face.”
EDM Producers love it!
From a multiband POV, it’s unique because it’s totally all-or-nothing.
It’s not about being subtle; it’s about that “smashed” digital energy that defines modern electronic music.
It’s a total life-saver for when a synth or drum loop feels thin and needs a massive shot of adrenaline to cut through a busy mix. Just a tiny bit of the Depth knob is usually all you need to transform a dull sound into a festival-ready monster.

LENS

We love Auburn Sounds and a free version of LENS makes us love them more. It’s a “spectral” beast.
What makes it super different is that it doesn’t use the regular crossovers you find in other plugins, so you don’t get those weird phase shifts that mess up your sound.
It uses up to 64 mini-compressors that all work together at once, which makes your audio sound incredibly smooth and punchy without feeling like it’s being chopped up.
Even though it’s the free version, it still gives you that “Over The Top” upward compression vibe that makes everything sound crisp and crystal clear.
It’s perfect for the master bus or a drum group where you want to add tons of detail and “spherical” glue without ruining the natural feel of your track/mix.
Since it stays phase-accurate across all those bands, it’s the best tool for getting a high-end sound while keeping things super simple.

DYNASAUR

Analog Obsession really nailed the vintage feel with DYNASAUR.
The knobs on it look like old-school hardware. But, the big thing to know is that it’s actually a 5-band powerhouse that can act like a dynamic EQ or a full-on multiband compressor.
It’s super unique because every single band has its own RMS and Peak switch. This is huge because you can set your low-end to react to the overall energy while letting your high-end catch those fast, pokey transients.
The plugin gives your tracks that classic analog “glue” and warmth without you having to spend a dime.
DYNASAUR is also famous for being very clean but still having that special character that makes a mix feel finished.
Format: VST3, AU, AAX
Compatibility: Windows 10 – 11 / macOS 10.11 – 14 (Apple Silicon Native)
Free Download – DYNASAUR (Click on the link and download the file compatible with your OS)
Cramit

Sixth Sample teamed up with Integraudio to create Cramit, and it’s a total beast for adding energy to your tracks.
We all love that “over the top” sound, but Cramit does something special by adding a two-stage distortion engine right into the signal chain.
You get to choose from seven different types of grit and decide if you want that crunch to hit your sound before or after the compression happens.
It’s not just a one-trick pony, either.
While most freebies only do upward or downward compression,
Cramit actually includes an expander too. This means you can totally reshape how punchy or smashed your audio feels with just a few sliders.
It even has 2x and 8x oversampling modes to keep your high-end sounding super clean and professional.
It’s the perfect choice if you want an aggressive and modern vibe but need a little more color and “vibe” than a standard digital compressor can give you.
Format: VST3, AU, AAX
Compatibility: Windows 8.1 or newer / macOS 10.13 or newer (Universal Binary)
Uraleq

I sometimes wonder how Uraleq is free because the team at Flandersh Tech really worked hard on this one. More than just a standard compressor, this is a powerhouse.
What makes this multibrand compressor plugin stand out is that it’s actually an “Advanced Multiband Processor.”
It doesn’t just squash your signal; it packs a dual delay and a balance control into every single one of its four bands.
This means you can add space and movement to your highs without touching your lows at all.
It’s also a beast for technical stuff because it offers Mid/Side processing per band and incredible 32x oversampling to keep everything sounding high-def.
You can even use the built-in LFOs to modulate almost any setting, turning it into a creative sound design tool rather than just a boring utility.
Format: VST3 (64-bit)
Compatibility: Windows 8.1 or newer
Convergence (Free Version)

Convergence is like a high-tech scanner for your audio. The free version gives you up to four bands to work with, which is plenty for fixing most mix problems.
The way the crossovers on this free multiband compressor work is amazing. The best one liner to explain it would be that they are designed to be “phase-minimal,” so your music stays sounding super clear and doesn’t get that blurry feeling that some other plugins cause.
It has these really helpful real-time displays for every band.
Instead of just turning knobs and hoping for the best, you can see a “historical waveform” that shows exactly how the compressor is shaping your sound compared to how it started.
It also has a snapping feature that helps you line up your frequency splits perfectly with just one click. You can get that tight and expensive sound real quick.
Format: VST3, AU, AAX, LV2
Compatibility: Windows 10 or newer / macOS 10.11 or newer / Linux
ReaXcomp

ReaXcomp is a limitless multiband compressor. It doesn’t have a limit on how many bands you can use. You can just keep adding more and more sections until you’ve carved out the exact sound you want. It’s perfect for being super surgical, like when you want to squash a tiny, annoying frequency in a vocal but leave everything else alone.
It’s known for being very “transparent,” which means it keeps your instruments sounding natural instead of adding a bunch of fake digital color.
Because it’s so lightweight, you can put it on every single track in your song and your computer won’t even break a sweat. It even has a solo button for each band so you can listen to just the bass or just the highs while you’re tweaking them.
Format: VST2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Compatibility: Windows (All versions), Linux (via WINE)
Free Download – ReaXcomp (Go to the link and select the right version and plugin.)
IEM – MultibandCompressor

The IEM MultibandCompressor is actually a specialized tool from a suite used for “3D audio,” but it works amazing for regular music too. Its biggest “superpower” is that it’s spatial-aware. This means when it compresses your sound, it makes sure the 3D image or the “stereo spread” doesn’t shift around or get ruined.
It uses four high-quality bands that are very smooth. It’s a favorite for the master bus because it glues everything together while keeping your instruments exactly where you panned them. If you’re worried about your mix losing its “depth” or feeling small after you compress it, this is the plugin that fixes that problem for you.
Format: VST, VST3, AU, AAX, LV2
Compatibility: Windows, macOS, Linux

HY-MBMFX2 (Free Version)

HY-MBMFX2 by HY-Plugins is like a laboratory for your sounds. It splits your audio into three bands, but it’s more than just a compressor it’s a multi-effect.
In the free version, you get one effect slot per band where you can choose from 22 different types of processing like filters, bitcrushers, or delays.
It’s awesome because it has a built-in modulation system. You can use an LFO or an “envelope follower” to make the effects move automatically based on how loud your music is playing.
It’s way more creative than a normal compressor and is perfect for making boring synth sounds or drum loops feel alive and bouncy.
Format: VST2, VST3, AUv3
Compatibility: Windows 7 or newer / macOS 10.9 or newer
Rough Rider Pro (Legacy)

Rough Rider Pro is the older brother of the famous Rough Rider compressor. This legacy version takes that legendary pumping sound and splits it into three bands. It’s not meant to be clean or polite; it’s meant to add vintage grit and a massive amount of “thump” to your tracks.
It has a very specific “warming” filter that makes digital sounds feel more like they were recorded on old tape machines.
It’s the best choice for drum buses or parallel compression where you want that aggressive, “smacked” sound that really grabs the listener’s ear. It’s simple, punchy, and has tons of attitude.
The only thing is that it a part of a legacy bundle now so whenever you are downloading it make sure you are activating Rough Rider Pro (Legacy) only.
Format: VST2, AU
Compatibility: Windows (PC), macOS (Legacy Intel Macs)
Free Download – Rough Rider Pro (Go to the link and from the list of plugins select the plugin you want and it will start downloading.)
Nano Dynamics

OneClickChords designed Nano Dynamics to be the ultimate “no-stress” tool for your mix.
It splits your audio into three main bands – Highs, Mids, and Bass. But it does all the heavy lifting for you by auto-detecting attack and release times. Something that we felt in love with when we tested the plugin.
May sound like an overkill for some looking for custom and super controlled attack and release times. But this multiband compressor provides you with the right control options.
This is a total slapper because the plugin analyzes your song in real-time and sets the timing perfectly so you don’t have to guess. It’s built around a very simple layout where you just use sliders to choose how much compression each band gets.
Once you’ve shaped your sound, the signal goes through a special Maximizer algorithm that glues everything together and makes it sound loud and radio-ready.
You also get a “Power” knob for global intensity and even a “Swing” control to add some rhythmic vibe.
Format: VST3
Compatibility: Windows 10 or newer (x64)
Free Download: Nano Dynamics (Click on the link and it directly start downloading)
GMulti

GMulti is a classic choice if you want something that is easy to look at and even easier to use. It’s a 3-band compressor that is famous for its visual feedback.
Each band has its own big graph where you can see exactly how the volume is being squashed in real-time.
This makes it a great “teacher” plugin because you can finally see how settings like “Threshold” and “Ratio” actually change your soundwaves as they happen.
A really handy feature is the Stereo Width knob for every band. You can use it to keep your sub-bass perfectly mono so it stays powerful and centered, while making your high-end cymbals or synths sound super wide and airy.
It also has a Mix control for parallel compression, which lets you blend your squashed sound back with the original audio so you don’t lose the natural “hit” of your instruments. It’s a very clean-sounding tool that gives you a professional level of control over the whole shape of your mix.
Format: VST2 (32-bit and 64-bit)
Compatibility: Windows (All versions), macOS (Intel), Linux
